What album would you recommend for someone who's looking to get into jazz?

I listen to mainly HipHop. I like the jazz sampling in Hiphop, and looking for something similar to that style.|||Can’t recommend just one album, but you will probably enjoy what is called “Acid” Jazz.

There are lots of great artists. Here a just few suggestions:

Liquid Soul – Make Some Noise

Down To The Bone - From Manhattan to Staten

Groove Collective – We The People

Thievery Corporation - The Mirror Conspiracy

See if you like some of it.

Enjoy!|||My Favorite Things, John Coltrane

Kind of Blue, Miles Davis|||For old school vocalese I would recommend Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, particularly their album "Sing A Song Of Basie" in which they add lyrics to many Count Basie tunes.

For a modern jazz vocalist that I really enjoy, try Jane Monheit.|||"Jazz" is such a broad term that I'd recommend just surfing around on YouTube and finding some names and styles that click with you. Here are five quite different vids to get the ball rolling. :)

Louis Armstrong – West End Blues:

Giant Steps - John Coltrane

Thembi - Pharoah Sanders

Psychicemotus - Yusef Lateef

Songs:

Decision - Sonny Rollins

Beatrice - Sam Rivers

Mademoiselle Mabry (Miss Mabry) - Miles Davis

Groove Waltz - McCoy Tyner

De Drums - Keith Jarrett

Cantaloupe Island - Herbie Hancock

Theme For Lester Young - Charles MIngus

But for the real Hip Hop in you:

Sho Nuff Mellow - Reuben Wilson

Mystic Brew - Ronnie Foster|||I can help by telling you that out of your first five answers, only Angiel has attempted to answer your specific style of something similar to hip hop.

I haven't heard any of the music that Angiel has suggested, but I do know that acid jazz is something like what your looking for.

I have heard all of the music of the other four answers, and although its good stuff, I don't think its what your searching for.

No disrespect to any of the people who answered.|||All these songs listed are great standards and fantastic jazz, but not really what your most likely looking for. Teaim is absolutely right. Acid Jazz is goin to be the closest thing to hip/hop style jazz your gonna get. Try some Jamiroquai. Here are some artists I just pulled up off the internet. I haven't listened to all of them but you might like 'em. Also try listening to some Miles Davis: Bitches Brew. It's a really cool album.
