Any tips for soloing in Jazz?

I am in the jazz band at my high school, and i play the Bari. Sax. I was wondering if there were any tips i should use when i solo|||One thing, just learn to feel it is the best. Even if it isn't a spectacular solo, as long as you are in to it, it will come across better.

The first thing is to know what scales will work for the chords you have (and the chords are the first, third, and fifth scale degrees of the scale, but other scales will work too). Then figure out what notes in each chord or scale are a half-step away from the next chord or scale. These will work well to transition from chord to chord.

Other than that, it is just practice. There is no switch any of us can tell you how to turn on that will suddenly make you good. It takes a lot of practice, a lot of time, and a lot of work. Don't worry about it too much either. Most of the people you will play with in high school are probably just as good (or bad) as you are at it, and have no idea what they are doing. There might be one or two who are gifted with the ability to pick it up quickly, but that doesn't matter.|||Learn all your scales well and have good facility on them. When soloing if you use the 1, 3, 5, 7 notes of the scale, you'll sound really hip. Also, you don't have to play a lot of notes - a mistake many saxophones make. Aim for making a melody or quoting easy folk songs like Mary Had a Little Lamb. It's a bit corny, but the audience loves to hear things they recognize. Practice soloing too.
