How do you figure out what notes are in jazz chords?

I have recently been selected to a jazz band based off of my classical skill on trumpet buit have little to no jazz experience. I need to beable to see a chord on the pg and realize what notes are in it so any pointers would be apreciated|||Jazz chords are really no different to any other chords. Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson have used them and even some classical music includes the odd jazz sound.

Chords start from triads (1-3-5 or 1-b3-5 etc) most middle of the road music, that's just about everything except classical %26amp; jazz, uses triads and four-note chords (the triad + another note like C6, Dm7, G7).

The next step is to add a fifth, sixth or seventh note. These upper structure chords can be made to sound very pleasant or quite harsh, but they're used in many styles of music.

All chords are "extracted" from a scale they belong to. Once you know the scale, the chord that goes with it becomes clear. Don't try to learn the chord notes, learn the scale first.

I suggest you start with the major scale modes and attached chords. That should not be hard for you if you have some classical training. Then progress to the melodic minor scale modes which include some nice jazz chords.

It just so happens that I've put all this out on a website with lots of other extras that you'll find useful. It's all free, but you'll have to opt-in (leave your name and email) to access it. Don't worry, I'm not trying to sell you anything! Use the link below, hope it helps.|||K think of scales, if its an F chord. It will be the 1st 3rd and 5th of the scale (F,A,C). And if its a minor chord the Third will be flat (F,Ab,C). It takes a bit of memorization, but worth it.|||http://www.tinyurl.com/lucasmanchords1

TADA!|||Oh how many times I had to meticulously write out every single note possible when learning an Ellington standard, or perusing a Parker solo...
