What is the jazz instrument that's been around since the 40s that sounds like an electronic kazoo?

I have that box set called "THe Complete Jazz At The Philharmonic On Verve" recorded in 1948. It's played on some of those recordings. It has an electronic sound, like an electronic bass kazoo,. But electronic musical instruments weren't even invented then. So I'm thinking it must be some kind of muted horn or woodwind instrument.|||You are right - it is probably a muted trombone or trumpet, there were a lot of brass players around at that time that could produce those effects with mutes.

RH|||Why couldn't it be a kazoo?

And there have been electronic instruments since the end of the 19th century:

I don't know what he did with his reed, but his tone can be a little bit kazoo like. I'm guessing his reed was very loose.

It might also be Roy Eldridge's high pitched muted trumpet playing.
