My high school jazz band is playing Jump, Jive, and Wail. There's an awesome tenor sax solo in the piece and I'd love to do it justice. If any of you have information on techniques I can do to give that particular solo (or any other solo) a little more jazz, that would be great. I'm definitely open to comments and advice. Thanks!|||doing a quick search for jump, jive and Wail. I found a few videos on you tube that could help get your solo to stay within the idiom. For the tune in question you would want to stay mainly pentatonic. Listen to guy's like 'Motorhead Sherwood' and Napoleon Murphy Brock to get some more out there ideas. They were both with Frank Zappa.|||The main thing is to listen to jazz and use your ears. When you listen to jazz you pick up little things that helps you play w/n the style, and going beyond that you can always "borrow" licks from other musician. Next you wanna learn music theory and learn what those chord changes above the solo bars:
they should look something like this
Dm9.....CÂș7....Cm6....G7/B...Bbmaj7...…

You should know that Dm9 = D minor 9 = D minor triad (D,F,A, = 1,b3,5 of the D major scale) + b7 (C), and the 9th (which is the 2nd note of the scale of D + 8va, so its E). So Dm9= the notes DFACE, these are the notes you can use over that chord....and blah blah more theory stuff, so learn your concepts.
Learn: intervals, triads, how chords = scales, and learn how use different scales over those chord changes and whatnot.

Otherwise the only advice I have, is to make sure that your putting all of your emotion into what you play, and its will be amazing. However lame it sounds, its all about the soul :)|||all you need to do is listen to a lot of Jazz. If you listen to Jazz Tenor allll day and alllll night, you'll start to play like a Jazz monster. also, try singing a solo over the chord changes. I always tell my students that if they can't sing it, they can't play it|||I'm not very good at using the instrument,
but if you play with soul jazz that you have, without any sense of nervousness will probably be better on stage.
remain optimistic that if you can show a good appearance.|||You can swing the notes a little bit or you can trill between them. Try tonging them softly or over exaggerate them.|||Syncopation and accidentals leading into strong notes on the strong beats (usually from a step away).
